STONEHAVEN Real Ale Festival is hoping for a tide of generosity to help boost two of the town's seafaring charities. Profits from this year's celebration of Scottish ales will go to Stonehaven Sea Cadets and to Maritime Rescue International, which runs Stonehaven's vital lifeboat service. And to celebrate the hard work of both organisations this year's special festival ale has been unveiled - to be called Seafarer.
Festival organiser Robert Lindsay said: "Both of these charities do remarkable work in Stonehaven - one helps save lives, the other helps build and shape young lives. "MRI and the Sea Cadets deserve all the support we can give them, and we are sure visitors to this year's festival will join in and toast to the very good health of both these organisations."

Last year, the festival - a not-for-profit event run by local real ale fans - attracted 2,000 visitors and raised £5,000 , which went to MRI.

Robert, owner of Stonehaven's Marine Hotel and a master brewer, said he was sure visitors would enjoy this year's festival ale during the three day event at Stonehaven Town Hall from Thursday, November 3, to Saturday, November 5. He said: "Seafarer is a nod not just to the two charities we are supporting this year, but also to Stonehaven's long seafaring tradition going back centuries and continuing to this day."

The ale is a classic bitter and was brewed vy festival organisers at Houston Brewery, this year's main festival sponsor. Robert said: "Houston's own Peter's Well was named Champion Best Bitter of Great Britain in the national CAMRA awards. I'm sure Seafarer will be a champion, too."

Drew Lawson, sailing training principal for Stonehaven Sea Cadets, said the backing of the real ale festival would be a boost for the young folk of TS Carron. He said: "We are fundraising for a new sailing dinghy at the moment, so the money raised for us by the festival will go towards that.  "The whole aim of the sea cadets is to give young people a wide range of experiences and opportunities to stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives. I'm sure visitors to the real ale festival will feel that's more than worth raising a glass to. "

Ann Laing, general manager of MRI, said she was delighted by the continued support of the real ale festival.  "It is so heartening to see a community event, such as the town's popular real ale festival, back the work that we do.

"Our organisation depends on donations such as this to keep us at sea and keep people safe.

"We hope that people will come along to the festival and have a great night, knowing they are helping others at the same time."

The festival is this year sponsored by Houston Brewery (www.houston-brewing.co.uk), Harviestoun Brewery (www.harviestoun.com) and The Bay Fish and Chips, Stonehaven (www.thebayfishandchips.co.uk)
